Paulette Melanson

Paulette Melanson is an artist who paints abstracts and landcapes. She lives in Lunenburg, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Nova Scotia, Canada.

A resident of Nova Scotia since 1985, Paulette Melanson grew up in the Acadian village of Scoudouc, New Brunswick where the family home was surrounded by farmland and forest. Early exposure to nature and science influences her work. Paulette’s art journey began early and finally came to fruition in a roundabout way by working in several unrelated fields while pursuing art education and making art whenever time permitted. She now has a fulltime art practice in the town of Lunenburg.

"My medium is acrylic, watercolour and paper collage. My current works include landscapes and abstract paintings inspired by my Acadian heritage and surroundings in the South Shore of Nova Scotia. My passion is unconsciously experimenting with paint and finding meaning in the resulting layers; the unconscious painting becomes my guide to what the painting wants to be. All my abstract works are produced that way. Their meaning most often comes after their execution. The painting may take hours, days, weeks, months or years to complete and it always seems to uncover a subconscious idea, message, dream or memory. The titles I assign to them are my interpretations and the greatest satisfaction I get is when I have the opportunity to hear others’ interpretation of the piece; the meaning it brings to them personally. Most often it is different than mine and, different for each individual viewer”.
